SALISBURY ROTARY SCHOLARSHIPS,
FINANCIAL AID, AWARDS

FINANCIAL AID FOR
COLLEGE-BOUND STUDENTS

For over 50 years, Salisbury Rotary has offered college-bound high school graduates financial aid.

Nearly two hundred young people have benefited from this program, which entails applications, interviews, and college acceptance. Financial aid is given on the basis of grades, extra-curricular activities, personal references, and future plans.

Financial aid is awarded each spring for students graduating in June and planning to attend the college of their choice in the following fall. Financial aid is sent directly to the recipient student when he/she arrives at the college of choice, and, following a successful first year, at the beginning of the students' second year.

Interested students may apply by emailing Mr. NEIL SCOTT of Salisbury Rotary at esslancs@snet.net or by writing to Salisbury Rotary at : P O Box 287 Salisbury , CT  06068

WELCOME HOME AWARDS
for Vocational/Technical Students

The WELCOME HOME AWARDS are given to students eager to get into the "real world" but who need practical, technical or vocational study beyond graduating at the high school level.

The awards are renewable and intended for students who want to pursue a two-year community college or vocational college course of study. The first three awards have been given to graduates of Housatonic Valley Regional High School. One young woman wants to become a veterinarian's assistant, another wants to open her own beauty shop after suitable and required study, and a third will be, within ten months' of very hard work, an LPN at Noble Horizons.

A special component of these awards is the pairing of students with LOCAL employers who will act as mentors and future employers of the students when their continuing education has been completed.

The Salisbury Rotary Club has already received job pledges from several local industries, with the view not only to hiring local youth but also keeping local youth in the NW Corner (or Tri-State Area) as citizens, wage-earners and community supports.

The goal of the WELCOME HOME AWARDS is simple: to keep young people from our area here at the end of their school days so that they may not only work happily and profitably in our communities (Canaan, Falls Village, Lakeville,  Norfolk, Salisbury and Sharon, CT and Millerton NY), but want to stay to raise their families in the neighborhood.

Applications may be made by contacting Ms. MONA STAFF-HOFFMAN at mona@salisburybank.com or by writing directly to Salisbury Rotary at PO Box 287, Salisbury, CT 06068.

BACK TO SCHOOL FOR HEALTH AWARDS

Created in 2003, these awards are destined for men and women who live in the NWCorner (Tri-State area) and who want to work in the healthcare industry. Rotary is offering financial aid to those who:
  • want to move within the healthcare establishment (hospitals, asisted living centers, etc.) from one level of service upwards to another, but who, in order to do this will need extra training and education.
  • have longed dreamed of working within this establishment, but whose dreams were put on hold as families, children and other jobs took precedence.
  •  men and woman holding two jobs, one in the healthcare community, who --- with greater training and time to devote to their studies - can make working in the healthcare community their single, more rewarding activity
  • high school graduates entering the field of their choice within healthcare
The major goal of Back to School for Health in simple: to improve healthcare throughout the communities in which we live.

We know there is a national nursing shortage. We also know that nursing schools throughout the country are jammed. But think of the other sorts of positions that need to be filled to make healthcare a qualitative, rewarding presence in our neighborhood:

Private care personnel
Homecare Specialists
Gerontologists
Certified Nurse's Assistant
Physical Therapist
Occupational Therapist
Licensed Practical Nurse
Speech Therapist
X-ray Technician
Dietitian
Lab Technician
Medical Coder
Pharmacists (and pharmacist's assistants)
Emergency Medical Technicians
EVS supervisors
Sterile Processing Technicians
Surgical Technologist

This list, too, is partial, but more importantly, THERE ARE JOB OPENINGS in our healthcare institutions at this very moment for all of the above workers.

The SALISBURY ROTARY CLUB'S Back to School for Better Health Awards are unique as a "scholarship" program in that the grants awarded may be used NOT ONLY for tuition, but also for real needs that allow the recipient to even consider applying. These grants may be used for *** daycare center expenses, ***continuing one's own health insurance while studying, ***transportation to and from the school of choice. These are just a few of the personal needs of applicants who may have long wanted to improve their positions within the industry as well as those who envision a more financially rewarding life for themselves and their families.

And the Salisbury Rotary Club PLEDGES that if the program entered by one of our applicants is more than a single year's study, we'll be there for you ALL THE WAY THROUGH!

The Back to School for Health Program includes:

Encouraging people already in the profession to aim higher
Assisting men and women to enter the healthcare community
Maintaining a data base of health care institutions and jobs available
Mentoring enrollees with assistance in making application, in interview techniques, new information, enthusiasm and support --- no new student will need to go through this experience alone!
Helping applicants towards certifications, where applicable, and selection of course load and study

We believe that the Back to School for Health Awards programs can "lift all boats," --- by helping adults (single parents, extended families, etc.) increase and improve their own standards of living AND the standards of living of their children and dependents.

With the Back to School for Health Awards program, who wins? Health care institutions; hospitals, private practitioners, applicants and their families, local economies AND us, the patients of this greater healthcare army.
